Small Groups

The British band Coldplay wrote a song called ‘Square One’. It goes like this: ‘From the top of the first page/To the end of the last day/From the start in your own way/You just want somebody listening to what you say/It doesn’t matter who you are.’

I think these words pretty much sum up the way a lot of our generation feel about life. We just want to know that someone cares about what we have to say.

Over recent years, we’ve seen a massive rise in the use of social networking and media-sharing websites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube (to name a few). One of the reasons that so many of us are using them is that they affirm the idea that ‘my life matters’ and that ‘the rest of the world needs to hear what I am doing and thinking’.

On Youth Alpha, we want to make time to hear what everyone on the course thinks and feels. We believe that their life and their opinion do matter, even if we don’t agree with them. We want to use the course to get to know each other and to build relationships. That’s why, in many ways, small groups on Youth Alpha are the most important part of the whole course.

The most important question you need to learn if you’re running a small group is: “What does everyone else think?”
